This surgery is done if there is skin ( cholesteatoma) in the middle ear extending to the bone. Main reason for the surgery is to remove the disease and make your ear safe. Safe meaning that if surgery is not done then this can extend into your brain and lead to serious consequences.
In this surgery bone is drilled which is called the mastoid area and the canal wall is lowered down to completely remove the disease. Tissue is taken behind the ear (Temporalis fascia) and used as a graft to make a new ear drum. Large cavity is created and also the opening of the canal is widened. Pack is kept for one week.
It is very important to understand that it takes more than six weeks for complete healing and sometimes up to 3 months.
